Building the 2025 ORXC Standard
At Owasso, we believe success isn't won on race day; it is built every day, one choice at a time. That’s why our 2025 XC Camp wasn’t just about running hills or logging miles. It was about defining who we are, what we value, and how we want to show up for each other. We spent several hours in focused team discussions with one purpose: to build a standard we can be proud of and commit to together. Our goal was to plan for success in the upcoming season.
We asked our athletes to reflect honestly on the kind of teammates they want to be remembered as. We talked about what a terrible season would look like—and what a miracle season could become. They dug deep, shared their stories, and took ownership of their future. This wasn’t a top-down lecture. This was a collaborative effort, built by the team, for the team.
Through these conversations, we identified patterns of behavior, expectations, and values that kept surfacing again and again. Then we refined those into action statements—bold, clear, and measurable. What came out of it is a living, breathing standard. One our athletes chose to call: THE BEAST!
Why The Beast? Because when a runner is tired, hurting, and full of doubt, we don’t want to yell a paragraph at them. We want a rally cry. A reminder. "Be The Beast!" means leaning into the process, trusting the team, and competing with heart—no matter what.
Here’s what that standard looks like in practice:
PRACTICE STANDARD
We show up ready to work—every day, no matter how we feel.
We finish what we start—even when it hurts.
We run with purpose on every rep and in every workout.
We don’t waste days—we run and recover with intention.
We bring focus, not excuses.
We hold each other accountable with honesty and respect.
RACE DAY STANDARD
We race for each other and for the TEAM—not just ourselves.
We trust our training and commit fully on race day. We aren’t afraid to take chances.
We don’t fear the pain of the race. It hurts because it’s supposed to—so we embrace it.
We stay mentally tough when things go wrong. We accept the good with the bad.
We pass people—we don’t settle!
We compete from start to finish, no matter what.
TEAM CULTURE STANDARD
We seek to lift each other up—always.
We celebrate effort over outcomes.
We listen, include, and respect every teammate.
We show up for one another—on and off the course.
We act in a way that future runners will want to follow.
We handle conflict with maturity and directness.
This isn’t just something we’ll hang on the wall. Every athlete who commits to The Beast standard signs the banner in our team room. That signature means something. It means you’re choosing to do things the right way, even when it’s hard. Especially when it’s hard.
Because being part of Owasso Cross Country isn’t just about chasing fast times. It’s about becoming the kind of person—and the kind of teammate—who leaves a legacy. It's about becoming a better version of yourself.
